Cape Le Grand - East of Esperance

Post by mgglasby on Sat Apr 09, 2011 12:09 pm

The old campsite at Lucky Bay is over crowded and looking in poor shape. It also looks like water from the campsite is seeping out onto the beach and is creating a nasty swampy looking surface where there used to be nice clean sand.

The campsite at Le Grand Bay is much better. Again it is very crowded and if you want to stay it would be best to conact the local DEC office to find out if there are sites available.

Both these sites have well equipped camp kitchens, showers and toilets. Being National Park you can't take pets in.

For those yet to visit this area, Esperance has some of the best beaches in Australia.

There is a track running from Wylie Bay (near Esperance) to Cape Le Grand along the beach. Use at your own risk and make sure you don't try it alone. It is 22km instead of the 60+ km via sealed roads.

As tide levels along the coastlines get higher (global warming is real I guess) you will want to check tides if you intend to drive the beach route. In all our recent travels we have seen the sea rising much higher on every beach we looked at that it ever did in the past.

some pics of Le Grand and the surrounds. A fab place to stay, Le Grand campsite is far better for campers as it has individual bays and privacy and is also a little bit more sheltered. There is a clean camp kitchen and flushing toilets. There is a solar hot shower but the temperature depends on the kind of day, when we were there it was overcast so the showers were luke warm. The area is great, the beaches and bays were fantastic. Plenty of challenging walks around for those who are into the whole "excercise" thing- i was happy to look from a distance, lol.
There was also limited telstra and optus reception around the place if you got out from behind a hill. Le grand beach was good for this as it has a clear view back to Esperance.
